Harm reduction, or harm minimization, accepts that idea that many people can’t or won’t completely stop using drugs or alcohol. The term “harm reduction” refers to a framework for helping reduce the harmful consequences of use when abstinence is not a realistic option. Although harm reduction was originally and most frequently associated with substance use, it is increasingly being applied to a multitude of other behavioral disorders. A core tenet of harm reduction is a relaxation on the emphasis on abstinence as the only acceptable goal and criteria of success. Instead, smaller incremental changes in the direction of reduced harmfulness of drug use are encouraged and accepted. Think a therapist armed with harm reduction techniques might be right for you? My clients are trans, non-binary, and queer people who have experienced trauma, survived gender-based harm, or not felt accepted in a vital relationship, often with a caregiver or partner. Sometimes they are healing from a relationship that was clearly traumatic: an abusive partner or violent parent. Other times, childhood just felt confusing, lonely, or hard. And some simply hold an identity that others feel entitled to invalidate and oppress.

I believe that my clients are the expert in their lives while recognizing that counseling can be scary. I believe in creating a space with mutual trust and respect that can allow for deep wounds to be healed. I prefer to work collaboratively with my clients, taking a person-centered approach that allows my clients to receive specialized care unique to their own personal needs. I have found that I work best with persons who are motivated to self-explore, seeking healing shifts in their lives.

Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.
