About My Clients
Clients at Expressionists counseling are interested in going beyond words to explore struggles with anxiety, depression, mood regulation, and self-compassion. Using an intermodal approach to psychotherapy with our innate desire to create (visual art, music, poetry, dance) as a therapeutic tool to help initiate change. We can also work through in-depth conversations, reading, and cinema. Anyone exploring how creativity, guided meditation, and mindfulness can improve their life will like it here!
My Background and Approach
Brandy King Schafer is a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and a National Certified Counselor. Brandy offers existential and person-centered expressive arts therapy at Expressionists Creative Counseling, LLC. As a collaborative presenter with EAFI at the 2019 International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) Conference, Brandy facilitated image exploration and living multi-modal sculptures for the “Cultivating Intentional Inclusivity” workshop. She also presented original research on infusing creativity, existentialism, and trauma-focused CBT.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that we are all creative beings and you have the power to create the life you want to live. Expressive arts therapy uses a variety of mediums to provide a connection catalyst to your inner self. We can connect deeply to thoughts and feelings through images, writing, movement, or sound in ways that might never come up through talking alone. Since the expressive arts are about the creative process and not the end result, it does not require any artistic training on the part of the client. It is essential; however, to find an expressive arts therapist who meets the requirements of supervised clinical work and advanced training at an approved expressive arts therapy institute. Qualified and registered expressive arts therapists agree to a code of ethics and to maintaining high standards of professionalism in the field.
