About My Clients
Every person has first hand knowledge of their own experiences and feelings and, therefore, they are the authority on themself. My first opportunity for connection is done through listening and validating a your experiences. By engaging in active listening, I can express my care and interest. The choice to make change should always come from you, while I, as the therapist, offer options that you may wish to utilize on your journey. It should, however, always remain your journey.
My Background and Approach
I am open and honest so that we can create a relationship of trust and deal with issues together and I provide a safe and non-judgemental environment. Because everyone is unique, I draw from many psychological modalities using mindfulness techniques from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. My approach could be considered a humanistic one, because it recognizes individuals and encourages choices personal to his/her/their experiences. In our lives, we are constantly confronted with decisions. Some of these appear to be roadblocks to us, and because of patterns of behavior and unhelpful ways of thinking, we can feel stuck. A therapist can be helpful to learn to recognize distorted thinking and patterns of behavior, and to help clients discover tools that can affect change and build self-confidence.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
In my work, I emphasize a relationship based on helpfulness, trust, and collaboration. Many people I’ve worked with regularly experience overwhelming feelings, and so I use a variety of techniques, theoretical approaches, and also may model tools to help to develop methods for self-regulation and to redirect focus. I see my role as therapist not as a teacher or an instructor, but as a supporter and a collaborator in the journey. Over the years I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children, and I have experience with both neurodivergent and neurotypical clients. I believe wellness develops from the process of learning to balance our feelings and our complex relationships with others, which at times, can feel like contradictory forces.
