Attachment theory, first developed by John Bowlby, is a psychology concept focused on the importance of attachment in relation to personal development. According to Bowlby’s theory, attachment is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process that begins at birth and continues through the first years of life. Fundamental to attachment theory is the belief that a child's relationship with the primary caregiver (usually the mother), affects their attachment style for the rest of their life. Unresolved or insecure attachment issues experienced in early childhood can have a negative impact on relationships into adulthood. A therapist who specializes in attachment theory can help. Do you have trouble understanding what you’re feeling, or why you’re feeling it? Maybe you often ask “does that make sense?”, unsure whether your thoughts are coming across how you want them to. Or you find that you're really hard on yourself, with a running narrative of “I’m the worst!”. Perhaps you’re scared to get things wrong, and feel unable to trust yourself to know what you want, let alone how to get there. If you relate to this and want to feel less anxious and more at ease, I can help!

Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.
