Interpersonal therapy, or IPT, is a short-term, focused treatment for mood disorders, such as depression. Rooted in attachment and communication theories, IPT is designed to help people address current concerns and improve interpersonal relationships. IPT is based on the principle that relationships and life events impact mood and that the reverse is also true. I help young people (ages 6-30) understand their strengths and challenges, discover healthy ways to manage fears and frustration, and accept support. Many lack important skills to manage demands of school, relationships, and life events, leaving them "stuck" in patterns of avoidance and resistance that can be confusing to others. Through our work and collaboration with families and other care providers, my patients often report improved self-esteem, self-awareness, and social interactions.
