Gender identity issues, sometimes called gender dysphoria or gender conflict, occur when an individual feels an inconsistency between their physical gender and the gender they truly feel or identify with. This most commonly exhibits itself as a physical discomfort with the gender one was assigned at birth, including the feeling of being in the wrong body. Children with gender dysphoria may express disgust of their own genitals or a certainty that they will grow up to be the opposite sex. Some individuals with gender identity issues treat this feeling by physically modifying their bodies to better match their gender identity. Gender dysphoria comes with it an increased risk for depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and bullying. My clients are highly motivated adults ready to reflect on the past to change their future. This is the space to explore your identities and practice unmasking. Redefine or hone each aspect of you, including gender, sexuality, dis/ability, neurodivergence, racial, and career identities as well as your social identities (geek, emo, etc). When you feel more like yourself, you will feel safe to connect with others and build communities where you can exist authentically.

I help young people (ages 6-30) understand their strengths and challenges, discover healthy ways to manage fears and frustration, and accept support. Many lack important skills to manage demands of school, relationships, and life events, leaving them "stuck" in patterns of avoidance and resistance that can be confusing to others. Through our work and collaboration with families and other care providers, my patients often report improved self-esteem, self-awareness, and social interactions.
