About My Clients
I primarily (but not exclusively) work with queer and trans people, and often poly/ENM folks an/or those in the kink community. I also primarily work with people who have experienced serious trauma. I know how important it is to find a therapist that understands where you're coming from and shares your values (at the same time as I know that the vast diversity in our communities means I can't/won't know everything!)
My Background and Approach
I'm experienced with individual and couples therapy, sex therapy, and working with trauma, depression, anxiety, many and other issues. I draw from a variety of modalities in my practice, though have a particular focus on EMDR and on narrative therapy. I'm trained in attachment-focused EMDR through the Parnell Institute and have practiced it for the past 2 years. I focus a lot on building good resources before moving to trauma desensitization, and individualizing the experience to accommodate people's needs, including neurodivergence. I've had a number of successful treatment experiences with people who have had previous negative experiences with EMDR when it's been applied too rigidly or with a disregard for individual needs. My grounding in narrative therapy reminds me that none of us are isolated individuals, we all exist in social systems and in the context of power. I have a particular focus on understanding the stories we tell, and how to use those for liberation.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Before working as a therapist, I worked for many years with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and with people who were homeless. These experiences and many others cemented my belief that capitalism, racism, ableism and other hierarchies are fundamentally opposed to human well-being. I bring a focus on justice and solidarity, and an analysis of power and oppression, that I think is important for integrating individual and collective experiences of trauma. I don't know what living a life that you love and value would look like for you, but I'm excited to help you find out.
