Trauma is often transmitted through families by direct traumatization by parental behavior, identifying with the parent's experience, or family dysfunction. The symptoms of generational trauma include hypervigilance, fears of death or no hope for the future, mistrust of outsiders, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), low self-esteem, issues of addiction, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.

An attachment disorder that develops in childhood may affect relationships in adulthood. A person with an attachment disorder may have difficulty trusting others or feeling safe and secure in a relationship. As a result, they may have difficulty forming and maintaining friendships and romantic partnerships.

During relationship/couples therapy, the therapist will try to change the way in which both partners interact with each other. The therapist will also aim to ensure couples are not behaving in a way which may cause any type of harm to the relationship. The aim of this type of therapy is to help you and your partner gain a better understanding of negative patterns within the relationship.

Clients explore their childhood in therapy. They may discuss their early relationship with their parent or caregiver, family dynamics as they grew up, and significant childhood experiences. They may explore connections between their childhood relationships and their adult relationships—how the past may have influenced the present. They may discuss skills to improve their current relationships, emotions, and behaviors
