About My Clients
I truly love supporting others and feel the relationship between the therapist and client is the most important factor in "success." Therefore, a lot will depend on you and if you feel we are a good fit. I greatly enjoy supporting those in helping professions and those dealing with challenging life transitions.
My Background and Approach
Hi! I am Dr. Meredith Smith, but please call me Meredith. I grew up in East Lansing, Michigan and knew I wanted to be in a helping profession from a very young age. I have always been someone that spoke up for others and am not known for going quietly into that good night when I see, hear, or experience injustice. I went into graduate school in 2001 in Chicago Illionois where I worked to understand my own privilege and strongly focused on Carl Rogers Client Centered/Person Centered therapy approach. This approach focuses on genuineness and congruence, unconditional positive regard, and empathetic understanding. While I do not practice this theoretic orientation to fidelity these days as I can be more directive when beneficial, these qualities are the foundation of my practice.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that all people need the necessary support in order to make changes and that finding love for ourselves is one of the hardest and most crucial components in personal success. I believe a large component of this being so difficult is due to oppressive systems rooted in white supremacy and the patriarchy. I believe it is important for us to challenge these antiquated systems but that we need support to challenge in this way. I am constantly working on being the best ally I can be as I believe allyship and cultural humility are fluid roles that require regular focus/attention.
