Trauma is defined as a deeply disturbing, threatening or scary event – everything from sexual assault, war, and violence, to car accidents or other incidents that could cause loss of life. Symptoms of experiencing a trauma may include severe anxiety, anger, nightmares, trouble sleeping, flashbacks to the event, frightening thoughts, avoidance of situations or places, feeling on edge and/or being easily startled. It is not at all uncommon for people who go through something traumatic to have temporary difficulty coping and acute symptoms, but with time, they usually get better. However, if the symptoms last longer than a month, get worse rather than better and affect your ability to function, you may need help. When you are suffering in the aftermath of a trauma, it might feel like you'll never get your life back. The good news is that it can be treated. Trauma therapy will help to improve your symptoms, teach you the skills you need to deal with your trauma and help to build your self-esteem. If you've been in therapy before, I'm glad you're still looking for the right therapist to fit your needs. As a mental health clinician, I'm passionate about destigmatizing the role mental health services play in our lives, especially for Black communities and people of color. I advocate for individuals and families to seek the best treatment based on their needs. In addition, I believe that as humans, it's necessary to heal from generational trauma.

Change is always hard but often necessary and attainable with the appropriate guidance and tools. My clients come from all backgrounds and statuses, but what they do have in common is pain and a goal and hope of overcoming it. I work best with clients who are motivated, curious, and seek therapy on their own so they are ready to apply themselves outside of therapy.

Do you find yourself constantly fighting with negative beliefs and critical thoughts playing through your head like a soundtrack? Trauma is often at the root of our depressive or anxious responses to the world. Some traumas are big and obvious, like a violent crime or a sudden loss, while others may look more like death by a thousand tiny cuts, the daily traumatic interactions of living with someone who was abusive, narcissistic, or neglectful.
