As a veteran and therapist I have a great deal of interest in treating PTSD and trauma in general. I have experience in many modes of trauma therapy as well as experience in utilizing EMDR in the successfully treatment of complex trauma symptoms. I have also worked with court mandated adolescent clients who have complex trauma issues. This has allowed me to not only gain experience in treating trauma with adults but also with treating ages adolescents ages 10 to 18.

Over the past three years I have had the ability to work with a myriad of clients on processing through their grief. The loss of a loved one is an extremely traumatic and difficult thing to work through. This is why I have made it an area of my therapeutic focus. Grief treatment is a long and complex journey and I have had experience in utilizing CBT and EMDR techniques in treating the distressing symptoms that come from grief.

I have extensive experience in the treatment of adolescent issues. I have been working with both court mandated and private adolescent clients for the past 6 years. Adolescent therapy is not the same as working with adults. Youth require a more intensive and engaged style of therapy that allows them to gain comfort in the therapy environment. This comfort then allows them to better address both their external and internal struggles they find themselves going through.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of treatment

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). Shapiro’s (2001) Adaptive Information Processing model posits that EMDR therapy facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and other adverse life experience to bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, affective distress is relieved.

Psychodynamic therapy is derived from psychoanalytic therapy, and both are based on the work of Sigmund Freud. Psychodynamic therapy is an in-depth form of talk therapy based on the theories and principles of psychoanalysis. In effect, talking about problems in a therapeutic setting can be extremely valuable for the individual. Comparatively, psychodynamic therapy is less focused on the patient-therapist relationship and more focused on the patient’s relationship with their external world.

The purpose of adolescence is for a child to psychologically and socially transform into a young adult. Breaking from their childhood attachment and security allows children to acquire freedom and responsibility to develop independence and to differentiate themselves from their parents and childhood to establish their own unique identity.
