About My Clients
You can absolutely stop struggling with and suffering from the things that keep you stuck. Perhaps you are ruminating about something you or another person "did wrong"--rehashing the past. Or you're rehearsing a frightening future, paralyzed by fear. I don't see people as broken, and I don't see the concerns they bring to counseling as problems. I believe you have strengths to draw from and values that can motivate and guide you, and we can find those things together.
My Background and Approach
I have a piece of artwork in my office that says "Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional." (attributed to many). So much of what makes us miserable is our own interpretation of what's happening around and within us. My goal as a counselor is to create a space where you feel safe saying out loud all the jumbled-up or self-critical things going on in your head, figure out what is keeping you stuck, and offer strategies that help you live a rich, full, and meaningful life. I listen for what is possible and reflect what I see. I would be honored to work with you on finding a way out of the muck. I tend to be that person friends go to when they need to talk something through, and nothing makes me feel more fulfilled than to be able to listen with my whole heart and offer another perspective to help people find their own strengths and solutions. Through my education as a counselor and trainings I've attended, I have tools to offer, but I also acknowledge that you are the expert on you!
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am committed to creating a safe and affirming space for clients of all relationship structures, gender identities, and sexual orientations. I believe that individuals have the right to define their identities and relationships in ways that are authentic and fulfilling for them. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, and I am open to learning from my clients' unique experiences and perspectives. I am committed to ongoing professional development to enhance my understanding of diverse relationship structures and to provide culturally competent care. I'm a meditator, musician, parent, spouse, daughter, cat fosterer, and book lover, and I'm known for organization at work and piles of clutter at home.
