About My Clients
My clients come to therapy for help with issues relating to their substance use, their relationship problems, their gender and/or sexual identity, their anxiety - or sometimes a mixture of all of these issues. All of them want to live a happier and more authentic life, where they are free to be themselves in all areas of their lives. Many of my clients are teenagers struggling with social anxiety, friendships, romantic relationships, body image, and sometimes depression and anxiety.
My Background and Approach
My background includes extensive work as a person in recovery; an ally to LGBTQIA+ friends, family and community; a ton of life experience and a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from William and Mary. As each individual is unique, so is my approach tailored to each client. I work from a person-centered and strengths-based approach, incorporating CBT and DBT where it is helpful, mindfulness and self-care, acceptance and commitment techniques, and parts work when needed to process past trauma. I have been trained in and embrace a trauma-informed approach to counseling. The type of work we do together will vary based on your specific needs. If you want to use art to express yourself in sessions, I have tools for that. If you prefer journal prompts that we can discuss in our next session, we can work that way. If you just need to talk - word vomit - on me during our session, I will listen without judgment.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As a Board Certified Counselor and as a human being, I am committed to stringent ethical standards in my client care and relationships. Even though I'm your basic White lady, I am also a vocal advocate for social justice and I'm constantly working to improve my cultural competence and fighting to disrupt systemic injustice. Come as you are - you will always be safe with me. Also, I believe that curse words used in context improve communication, and laughter is essential to well-being. That applies to therapy, too.
